Winter bear reflections

This time of year always feels as if I want to make like a bear: crawl into a cave and be very still. This year I realised that visiting some old 'friends' helps: it is maybe a time for remembering, listening and relearning; hearing and sharing stories.

So, here is a quote I always find helpful to remember - not only as a drama therapist, but as a human being:

“Before every session, I take a moment to remember my humanity. There is no experience that this person has that I cannot share with them, no fear that I cannot understand, no suffering that I cannot care about, because I too am human. No matter how deep their wound, they do not need to be ashamed in front of me. I too am vulnerable. And because of this, I am enough. Whatever the story, they no longer need to be alone with it. This is what will allow healing to begin." (Carl Rogers)

The words that strike me are humanity, ashamed (and how often people carry shame that truly does not belong to them) and that old bug bear vulnerability. Ultimately, the need for humility and deep admiration for the human spirit's ability to not only survive but also recover. The gift of dignity we so often forget.
